Let’s look at what your tears are and what they are made up of.  In short tears have 3 main components:

1. Water (aqueous) component – cleans & hydrates the eye

2. Oil (Lipid) component – keep tears from evaporating and protect

3. Mucous (mucin) component – spreads the tears across the surface of the eye

Each component of the tear film serves a critical purpose.

Each tear component is produced by different glands on or near the eye:

    - The Oily component is produced by meibomian glands in the eyelids.
    - The Watery component is produced by lacrimal glands.
    - The Mucous component is produced in the conjunctiva that covers the white part.

A problem with low levels of any of these 3 components can result in dry eyes.
